What is noninvasive body contouring?
Noninvasive body contouring improves the shape and proportion of your body by eliminating localized pockets
of fat. Noninvasive procedures aren’t for extensive weight loss, so they’re best for people who are close
to their desired body weight.
Dr. Long performs body contouring using an innovative device called ThermiSmooth Body. It’s useful for getting
rid of trouble spots like belly fat, love handles, thighs, back, and upper arms.
Does ThermiSmooth Body also treat cellulite?
Yes, ThermiSmooth Body can reduce the appearance of cellulite. In addition to eliminating areas of fat, this
device also makes existing collagen contract and stimulates the production of new collagen for stronger
and better-toned skin. The combined effect – fat loss together with tightened and toned skin – diminishes
How does ThermiSmooth Body eliminate fat?
ThermiSmooth Body uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to heat the targeted areas of stubborn fat. Dr. Long controls
the treatment to reach the desired depth under your skin and customizes RF therapy for your trouble spots.
After placing a flat applicator against your skin, Dr. Long moves it in gentle, circular motions over the
targeted area. RF energy heats the fat cells until they reach the precise temperature that makes them
break down. Then the destroyed cells are naturally eliminated by your body, so they’re gone for good.
What should you expect during and after treatment?
You receive a series of ThermiSmooth Body treatments over 6-8 weeks. While four treatments are advisable
for optimal results, Dr. Long determines the number of treatments needed after your initial examination.
Each session lasts about 15 minutes. During that time, the heat is so well-controlled that you should be
comfortable. In fact, the treatment often is compared to having a soothing hot stone massage. Your skin
may be a little red afterward, but you can get right back to your regular activities.
Most people see improvement after the first treatment. It takes time for your body to clear away the destroyed
fat cells, however, so you may not see the full results for several months.
If you’re not sure whether you’re a good candidate for body contouring, please don’t hesitate to call the
office and schedule a consultation. Dr. Long will talk with you about your weight loss goals, evaluate
your problem areas, and determine whether ThermiSmooth Body will achieve the results you want.
What are the benefits of skin tightening?
As you age, your skin produces less collagen and elastin, so it loses strength and resilience. Supporting
connective tissues weaken, cushioning fat deep below your skin diminishes, and skin becomes dry. The
net result is loose, sagging skin and wrinkles. Sun damage only speeds up the process.
Skin tightening through noninvasive or minimally invasive procedures can reverse the effects of time on your
skin. It can be done anywhere on your body, but the areas most commonly tightened are the face, neck,
back of the arms, upper chest, stomach, and thighs.
What happens when skin is tightened with radiofrequency energy?
The following changes take place when an area of skin and its underlying tissues are heated to a precise
temperature using radiofrequency (RF) energy:
- Tissue retraction: The heat immediately tightens the skin by shrinking collagen
- New collagen formation: RF heat stimulates new collagen production
- New elastic fiber formation: RF heat also stimulates elastin production
- Improved circulation: Boosts blood and lymphatic flow
- Fat cells breakdown: Controlled heat destroys fat cells
You get an immediate feeling of skin tightening as old collagen contracts. Then, as new collagen and elastin
form and replace old tissues – a process called remodeling – your skin gains strength and noticeably
Dr. Long offers skin tightening using two cutting-edge devices, ThermiSmooth® Body and ThermiTight®.
How does ThermiTight improve skin tone?
ThermiTight tightens skin using radiofrequency waves, but it’s a unique, minimally invasive procedure in
which Dr. Long inserts a thin probe under your skin. With such a small probe targeting a specific location,
this method allows for precise skin tightening.
Once Dr. Long has the probe in place, she applies a controlled amount of heat through the probe to the tissues.
The tip of the probe provides constant feedback that lets her monitor the temperature throughout your
With just one application, the treatment area goes through the remodeling process, and your skin tightens.
How does ThermiSmooth Body work?
ThermiSmooth Body also uses RF energy, but it’s a minimally invasive procedure performed using a larger device
placed against your skin. Dr. Long gently moves the device over your skin in a circular motion as it
sends RF energy into the tissues below.
The ThermiSmooth Body device covers a larger area, but it works on the same principle – RF energy heats the
tissues, stimulates collagen and elastin production for skin tightening, and eliminates fat.
What is vaginal atrophy?
You need estrogen to maintain the health of your vagina. It keeps vaginal tissues elastic, maintains adequate
blood flow, and supports lubrication.
Many women develop vaginal atrophy as levels of estrogen decline in the years before and after menopause.
Their vaginal tissues thin out, lose elasticity, and become susceptible to inflammation.
Vaginal atrophy causes symptoms such as:
- Vaginal dryness
- Vaginal burning
- Painful intercourse
- Pain or burning during urination
- Urinary incontinence
How does ThermiVa® rejuvenate the vagina?
ThermiVa is an innovative medical device that uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to rejuvenate tissues inside
the vagina. Dr. Long inserts a specially designed applicator into your vagina, which emits RF waves that
penetrate through its tissues.
RF energy gently heats vaginal tissues, which has an immediate tightening effect as collagen proteins contract.
The heat then reaches a therapeutic temperature that activates the production of new collagen and increases
As the boost in collagen and blood flow regenerate tissues, the tone and texture of the vaginal lining improve
and the vaginal wall tightens. You regain vaginal health and symptoms of vaginal atrophy disappear.
What should you expect during and after treatment with ThermiVa?
One ThermiVa session takes about 30 minutes. During that time most women are quite comfortable because the
treatment is gentle and well-tolerated. The ThermiVa device monitors tissue temperatures and RF energy
to ensure your safety.
You can return to your normal activities as soon as your treatment is over. Many women don’t experience side
effects, but you may have some slight redness and swelling. Dr. Long may recommend avoiding sexual intercourse
for a few days to give vaginal tissues time to heal.
When will you notice results?
Results develop gradually as blood supply improves and new collagen develops to replace atrophied tissues.
In fact, the changes continue to occur for about six months after your treatment, but you notice results
In addition to vaginal rejuvenation, symptoms of stress urinary incontinence also may improve following ThermiVa
You may notice a significant improvement after your first ThermiVa session, but many women get 2-3 treatments
initially. After that, the results are long-lasting, and you only need maintenance treatment once yearly.
Can you get a facelift without surgery?
Many people think that the only way to a more youthful appearance is through surgery. While surgery can achieve
dramatic results, you don’t need it to erase signs of aging, like loss of elasticity and volume.
Dr. Long offers a variety of noninvasive or minimally invasive procedures that can diminish wrinkles, tighten
your skin, rejuvenate your neck, and lift your face.
What is the Silhouette InstaLift™
The Silhouette InstaLift targets your midface, which is one of the first areas to show facial aging.
As you age, the thin cushion of fat under your skin diminishes, skin and supporting muscles lose tone, and
gravity exerts its influence. As a result, your cheeks and the area underneath your eyes lose volume
and appear droopy.
Dr. Long uses dissolvable sutures with bidirectional cones to lift deep tissues under the skin in the middle
of your face. The sutures hold your skin in place initially, but as they gradually dissolve, scar tissue
and new collagen develop that hold the lift in place. The procedure is done in the office, takes about
45 minutes, and requires minimal time for recovery.
How does Botox® work?
Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin that Dr. Long injects into the facial muscles responsible for
dynamic wrinkles. The toxin blocks nerve signals, so the targeted muscles relax and the wrinkles they
cause are minimized or eliminated.
Botox treats wrinkles that develop from years of using the same muscles to make facial expressions, which
includes crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead furrows, lines at the top of your nose, and bands on your
Your wrinkles diminish in 3-7 days, and your results last from 3-6 months. When the effect begins to disappear,
you can get another Botox injection to maintain your fresh appearance.
What is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is a noninvasive procedure that uses ultrasound to lift and tighten your neck, under the chin,
and on the eyebrow. Dr. Long places a handheld device against your skin, which sends ultrasound energy
to tissues beneath the surface.
As ultrasound energy heats the targeted tissues, it causes existing proteins to contract and stimulates collagen
production. You may see an immediate impact due to tightening when proteins contract, but you see the
full effect over 2-3 months as new collagen grows in, lifting and tightening your skin.
What are the body-wide effects of low estrogen?
Low levels of estrogen are well known for causing hot flashes, night sweats, and mood changes, but they have
a larger impact on your body. Estrogen helps maintain elasticity in tissues that line your blood vessels
and vagina. It plays a significant role in keeping bones healthy and preventing osteoporosis.
Estrogen also has a significant influence on the health of your skin. It affects skin thickness, promotes
hydration, and influences the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid. The development of dry, aging
skin accelerates when your estrogen levels are low.
What are the effects of low progesterone?
Progesterone is a female sex hormone that’s especially important for regulating menstrual cycles, maintaining
a pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
Women need the right balance of progesterone and estrogen. When progesterone levels drop, and estrogen becomes
dominant, women are at risk for weight gain, irregular menstrual cycles, fibrocystic breasts, endometriosis,
and thyroid dysfunction.
What are the symptoms of low testosterone?
Levels of testosterone in men naturally decline as they age. Just as estrogen has a broad influence in women,
testosterone affects diverse aspects of male health. When testosterone levels drop, men experience symptoms
- Loss of sex drive
- Erectile dysfunction
- Loss of muscle mass
- Reduced muscle strength
- Weight gain
- Development of breasts
- Loss of beard or body hair
Men may also find it hard to concentrate, experience mood changes, and develop fatigue. After Dr. Long rules
out an underlying health condition, the primary treatment for low testosterone is hormone replacement
What is the role of DHEA?
DHEA is a hormone that your adrenal glands produce. It’s converted into other hormones, including testosterone
and estrogen. DHEA provides 75% of women’s estrogen before menopause and 100% after menopause.
Levels of DHEA peak in your 20s, then continuously decline as you age. Restoring your levels of DHEA with
hormone replacement may improve age-related health concerns such as osteoporosis, depression, vaginal
atrophy, insulin resistance, and other issues that arise due to low estrogen or testosterone.
DHEA also has a role in the health of your skin. It may increase production of collagen and increase oil
production, which helps keep aging skin moisturized and supple.
How do injectable fillers rejuvenate your appearance?
As you age, the natural layer of fat under your skin thins out, making cheeks look hollow and wrinkles more
noticeable. Injectable fillers replace the underlying cushion of fat to restore volume and diminish the
appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Dr. Long offers a variety of injectable fillers so she can customize treatment to meet your cosmetic goals.
Some fillers contain similar ingredients, but each one has a different quality that may make it the best
choice for your needs.
What is Juvéderm®?
Juvéderm is the brand name of a group of injectable fillers that contain hyaluronic acid. Your skin naturally
produces hyaluronic acid to retain moisture and add fullness.
Each Juvéderm product targets different problem areas:
- Juvéderm Vollure™ XC: Corrects moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds
- Juvéderm Volbella® XC: Augments lips and diminishes vertical lip lines
- Juvéderm® XC: Diminishes parentheses lines or smile lines around nose and mouth
- Juvéderm® Ultra XC: Plumps thin lips and adds fullness to parentheses lines
- Juvéderm Voluma® XC: Adds volume, lift, and contour to cheeks
What is Restylane®?
Restylane is also a family of injectable fillers that contain hyaluronic acid. Each product is formulated
to act like your body’s hyaluronic acid and has a specific purpose:
- Restylane® Silk: Used for subtle lip augmentation of to smooth wrinkles around the mouth
- Restylane® Lyft: Augments cheeks, restores midface volume, and treats facial folds
- Restylane® Refyne: Smooths marionette lines and nasolabial folds
- Restylane® Defyne: Smooths deep lines around mouth
What is Radiesse®?
Radiesse consists of tiny spheres of calcium mixed into a smooth gel. After Dr. Long injects Radiesse, the
microspheres add volume and stimulate collagen production. Radiesse diminishes the following:
- Smile lines
- Marionette lines
- Jowl lines
- Wrinkles at the corners of your mouth
- Wrinkles on your chin
What is Sculptra® Aesthetic?
Sculptra Aesthetic contains injectable poly-L-actic acid, which stimulates collagen production. Collagen
is responsible for strength and structure in your skin, yet you lose about 1% of collagen per year after
the age of 18. As Sculptra Aesthetic promotes collagen synthesis, it helps replace volume lost due to
What is Bellafill®?
Bellafill combines two ingredients – a collagen gel base and tiny polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) spheres.
The collagen provides volume, while the PMMA microspheres support the development of new collagen. Dr.
Long uses Bellafill to correct nasolabial folds (smile lines) and to diminish the appearance of acne
What are the primary types of wrinkles?
Your face develops two types of wrinkles. The fine lines and wrinkles associated with the aging process form
for three simple reasons: Collagen production declines, skin becomes less elastic, and it becomes more
Your skin also loses volume as fat that once formed a thin cushion under your skin diminishes, drops downward,
and accumulates in pockets. Exposure to ultraviolet light breaks down skin’s connective tissue, too.
The net result is loose skin and wrinkles. These wrinkles are called static wrinkles.
The second primary type – dynamic wrinkles – develop over years of repetitive muscle movement as you make
facial motions like smiling, squinting, and frowning. Botox efficiently diminishes dynamic wrinkles because
the treatment targets the responsible muscles.
How does Botox diminish dynamic wrinkles?
Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin that’s injected into the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles.
It blocks nerve signals that make the muscle contract. As a result, the muscle stays relaxed, and the
wrinkle it caused diminishes or disappears.
Botox is used to treat:
- Crow’s feet
- Forehead furrows
- Frown lines between eyebrows
- Bunny lines at the top of your nose
- Skin bands on your neck
How long does Botox last?
Wrinkles diminish in about 3-7 days, and the results last 3-6 months. When the effect wears off, you can
get another treatment.
What is Xeomin®?
Xeomin is another brand of injectable botulinum toxin that’s used to treat dynamic wrinkles by blocking nerve
activity and relaxing muscles. Its results are similar to Botox: Wrinkles diminish within a week, and
the effects last 3-6 months.
Xeomin, however, is formulated differently than Botox. It contains pure botulinum toxin without any of the
additives that comprise Botox and other similar products. The lack of additives eliminates the possibility
of reacting negatively to extra ingredients.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure for both injectables takes about 10-20 minutes, depending on the wrinkles treated. The injected
areas may be a little red for a while, but you don’t need to take time off to recover – you can get right
back to your normal daily activities.
What is an IPL photofacial?
An intense pulsed light (IPL) laser uses many wavelengths of specially filtered light. By comparison, other
lasers only operate on one wavelength at a time. Differently colored pigments in your skin absorb specific
wavelengths, which means that an IPL laser can treat multiple facial discolorations at one time.
As pigments absorb light energy, they heat up and break down. Then your body naturally eliminates the waste
and the pigment permanently.
IPL photofacials efficiently improve your skin tone by eliminating discolorations. A photofacial can also
tighten and strengthen your skin by stimulating collagen production.
Aesthetic concerns treated with an IPL photofacial include:
- Age spots, sun spots, and freckles
- Spider veins
- Non-cancerous brown spots
- Redness from broken capillaries
What other pigment-related concerns are treated with lasers?
These aesthetic procedures target different issues, yet they’re all treated efficiently with lasers due to
their colored pigments:
Lasers can be set to a wavelength that’s absorbed by pigments in the hair follicle but doesn’t affect the
surrounding skin. Heat from the laser destroys the hair follicle, so it can’t grow new hair.
Dr. Long uses the cutting-edge laser technology available in the Alma PicoClear laser system to eliminate
multi-colored tattoos in fewer treatments than most other lasers. This laser has four wavelengths, each
one for different ink colors, and it can be set to different pulse speeds to customize your treatment.
Leg vein treatment
Leg vein sclerotherapy eliminates visible leg veins by injecting a chemical that makes the vein collapse.
Laser vein treatment accomplishes the same goal without an injection. Instead, it uses a wavelength that’s
absorbed by the red and blue pigments in your veins, then breaks them down.
Can one laser system target multiple aesthetic problems?
Dr. Long proudly performs aesthetic procedures using state-of-the-art laser systems that are multi-application
platforms. Two systems available in her office, Lumenis® IPL M22 and the Harmony XL, are designed to
provide several aesthetic treatments.
The Lumenis IPL M22 treats more than 20 skin conditions, such as vascular lesions, pigmented lesions, active
acne, and hair removal. The Harmony XL provides skin resurfacing and rejuvenation of facial tone and
texture, as well as pigment clearance, hair removal, and acne treatment.
